Fargesia sp. Jiuzhaigou I

jiuzhaigou8.jpg

This is an amazing red colored bamboo recently introduced to the western world. Collected in the upper regions of Jiuzhaigou National Park located in the Aba Tibetan Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of northwestern Sichuan province, near the Gansu border. This beautiful bamboo has proven to be very hardy to well below zero. The stunning red coloring of the older canes mixed with the light green of the new canes, and it's very erect structure are Juizhaigou's outstanding garden attributes. The branches are very short for a Fargesia and the overall look of the plant is strong and erect even with the small delicate looking leaves.

In our garden this bamboo tends to look its best in the spring, summer and fall. In early winter it sheds a fair amount of leaf as a protection measure against the wind and cold in its native area. As the weather warms in early spring the flush of bright green leaf is a real treat! Performs its best in full sun to partial shade in well draining rich garden soil. It must get at least full morning sun to attain the reddish color of the older canes. Juizhaigou will grow 10 to 12 feet tall in Portland under the described conditions. Like most of the Fargesia genus some protection from the hot afternoon sun is recommended. This bamboo is a prized possession for any collector. Pronounced "Jew-chai-go". It is still rare in cultivation. (VERY LIMITED STOCK)
