A Local Organic Bamboo Garden and Nursery

Specializing in Non-Invasive Cold Hardy Clumping Bamboo

PLEASE NOTE: You must schedule an appointment before coming out to our property!

The nursery is located at our family residence just outside the city limits of Portland, Oregon in Cedar Mill. We started collecting bamboo in 1996 and currently grow over 30 different species, many of which are very rare in cultivation. In 2006 we obtained a nursery license to legally sell bamboo divisions to the public.

We grow all of our plants using organically inclined methods. The organic potting soil we use for plant divisions is a very rich bat guano based soil that is commercially available. Our preferred fertilizer for potted bamboo is Bio-Turf Organic Grass Fertilizer from Down to Earth Distributors, Inc manufactured in Eugene, Oregon. In the garden only natural soil ammendments such as composted steer manure, mushroom compost and shredded leaves are used as top dressings and mulches for the bamboo clumps and groves. The garden and nursery are pesticide and herbicide free. We depend on the natural environment of predator insects, diversity of plants, birds and animal life to help manage our garden.

Why grow your garden using organic methods? The aim of the organic gardener is to create an environment in which healthy plants can be grown successfully and pests and diseases discouraged without damaging or polluting the soil or destroying wildlife. Nature has created its own system of checks and balances, predators and prey, and if you create an environment in which they all flourish side by side, then nature will do much of the work for you. In Oregon and specifically in the Portland area bamboo is a vigorous grower with very few pests making it an exceptional plant to add to any garden collection.

We need your help to keep our garden free of bamboo mites. If you already own some bamboo; don't touch, rub up against or go into your bamboo groves prior to visiting us. This helps to contain the spread of bamboo mites from your garden into our garden since they can easily hitch a ride on your clothing or in your hair. Currently there are no known natural predators for control. I encourage you to let me know in advance if you have bamboo mites to help you limit the spread.

Thank you,
