Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon'

HenonCR.jpg

Henon is one of the largest timber bamboo that can be grown in our mild Portland climate. It forms a beautiful tall grove quickly given adequate room to spread its rhizomes. Easily capable of growing 30 feet tall in adverse conditions, it averages 40 feet, and has been reported to have achieved even 50 feet in height locally. Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' has similar characteristics to Phyllostachys nigra (black bamboo), and is thought to be the true "mother" bamboo from which black bamboo originated from, along with the many other nigra cultivars that have some black coloring in the culms. One of Henon's best qualities is the small, feather-like leaf pattern. When viewed from a distance, one can peer into its airy depth within layers upon layers of delicate green foliage. Henon grows very erect with strong culms that can take a snow and ice load without breaking. The culms will bend to the ground and when warmer weather arrives, will pop back up. This bamboo also has exceptional hardiness. Although rated to 0°F, a well established grove may survive -10°F with only top kill observed. A 4 to 6 inch layer of mulch or composted steer manure applied to the grove in autumn will increase the growth potential each spring season. The added warmth, insulation, and nutrients provided by the top mulch will set the stage for very large culms which can achieve 3" to 4" in diameter in the tallest heights. Henon makes a beautiful specimen and can be grown into a true bamboo forest if given adequate space. A growing area 30 feet or more in circumference is ideal. It can also be persuaded to form a very tall, narrow privacy screen if containerized. We have various pot sizes for sale all times of the year.
