Fargesia apicirubens formally called "dracocephala" is another clumping bamboo from the high
mountain regions of China found at elevations above 6,000 feet. The plants currently in US cultivation were originally seedlings
collected and grown in the 1980's. We don't expect this bamboo to flower for quite a few years. Hardy to well below zero this
evergreen bamboo stays beautiful all winter long. It is reported in its native habitat to grow 16 feet tall but here in the
Northwest you're more likely to achieve 8 to 10 feet in good garden soil.
Since it is a clump-type bamboo, it can be planted in the garden without fear of it spreading. Fargesia apicirubens
grows with a strong weeping habit and forms a very dense clump. It can be used to make an almost impenetrable hedge of bamboo
if there is sufficient room for the weeping habit. The culms are solid and make great small garden stakes. If possible protect
this bamboo from the hot afternoon sun, or the leaves may show signs of leaf burn. (LIMITED STOCK)
